Background

The Road to Dignity was spoken by the UN Secretary in the context to end poverty, transform all lives and protect the planet. The Road to Dignity is a transformative agenda to continue the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Road to Dignity was presented in the form of synthesis report featuring presented dignity, people, prosperity, the planet, justice and partnerships as an integrated set of “essential elements” for delivering Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The initial pathway of SDGs was started from the 1992 “Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro. The pathway was then continued by the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals in 2000. Since that period, people are placed at the center of the development. The SDGs are voluntary framework, it means that governments are not legally required to implement them. However, SDGs framework can be used as a guidance to conduct the development that involve civil society and ensure that no one is left behind. By ensuring this process, the nation dignity can be achieved.

Dignity refers to the poverty ending and fighting for inequalities. It takes a lot of capital to achieve prosperity and dignity of the nation. There is a need to integrate economic development, natural resources management and protection and social equity and inclusion, as introduced for the first time by the 1987 Brundtland Report.

Indonesia also has a strong commitment to achieve the nation dignity. Over the past few decades, the economic growth is considered strong. The economic performance has been shaped by the government policy, endowment of natural resources and the growing labor force. The economic growth is expected to have a significant influence on the national development, whereas national development reflects to the ability of a country to improve the social welfare of the people. Beside policy, the role of engineering to achieve the national development as well as the goals mandated by SDGs is also important. In addition, arts, culture and education also have contribution, especially in communicating the agenda of SDGs. All in all, the integration of policy, engineering, arts, culture and education is recognized as a means to foster the national development and eventually to achieve the nation dignity.
